| Brother and sister bushwalkers’
work explores landscape
Bushwalking brother and sister artists Anne and John Tassie are back in Canberra with an exhibition of new works exploring landscape at Mawson Gallery. In “Geolittoral” Anne, a painter and John a photographer, explore some of Australia’s coastline and landscape from Adelaide and Kangaroo Island to the south western coast of Victoria and the south coast of New South Wales. Laden with paints and cameras the award-winning artists trek the landscape in extended camping trips and then interpret the landforms in their own special way. Each artist begins with “realistic” sketches and photographs but their final works are manipulated, cut, rearranged and re-worked to present an all-encompassing viewpoint. Both artists are now based in Canberra. Anne, a former scientist, is completing a master of Visual Art. John has completed a Bachelor of Design (Photography) at CIT. They have been trekking and creating art together since the early 1990s and have notched up an impressive list of art awards and art residencies. Anne describes her works in mixed media on canvas as a journey through the landscape. “It is my experience of wandering through an area. The aim is to encompass a whole rather than just a single viewpoint and to convey a sense of place. My journey explores the landscape through intervals in space and time. “I am also interested in patterns in the landscape and in geological time,” she said. John says his work explores natural and man-made landscapes and aims to show the value and importance of all landscapes. “My work, through digital manipulation of photographs, explores the questions of what is a ‘man-made’ landscape and what is a ‘natural’ landscape?” Several art critics have compared John’s work favourably with British artist David hockey whose monumental work “A Bigger Grand Canyon” is in the National Gallery of Australia. The exhibition begins at MAWSON GALLERY, 63 Wilkins Street, Mawson on 9 March and runs until 3 April. It will be opened by John Reid, Convenor, ANU Environment Studio. Opening hours are 10.30am – 5.30pm Wednesday to Sunday. Or by appointment anytime. Phone 6161 2177, mobile 0438 473 902. |
